What are zip screens?
Zip screens are a type of exterior solar shading system that consists of a heavy-duty fabric stretched on rails at the sides. The edges of the fabric have specially designed zippers that lock into the rails, hence the name. This makes zip screens tighter and more stable than ordinary screens.
Zip screens are installed on the outside of doors, windows and glass façades and can be raised and lowered as required. They are particularly suitable for large glass surfaces with a lot of light penetration. They provide effective solar shading, privacy and UV protection, and reduce the need for air conditioning.
Zip screens are available in many colors and with varying degrees of transparency, from light-tight to almost completely transparent. Most people choose something in between that provides good screening, but also allows natural light in. Zip screens make it easier to maintain a comfortable indoor temperature by allowing you to regulate the amount of solar heat that enters through the windows.

What do screens cost?
The price of screens will vary based on size, color, quality of the fabric, whether they are supplied with manual or motorized operation, and whether installation is included or not.
- The price per screen can vary from NOK 3.000 to NOK 20.000.
- Motors for screens usually cost between NOK 3.000 and 6.000.
The most affordable solutions with screen and motor usually cost between NOK 5.000 and NOK 10.000. Shipping is usually included in the price, but not installation. Custom-made screens with a motor, including installation, typically cost from around NOK 15.000, depending on the size of the screen.
The most affordable solutions usually consist of screens of somewhat simpler quality. Prices rise quickly for screens in exclusive fabrics with better impregnation and longer durability. Most people find that the comfort and energy-saving properties of screens are well worth the investment. By investing in high-quality screens, you get a solution that lasts for many years.
What is included in the price?
When getting a quote for screens, it’s important to check carefully what’s included in the price. Even if something appears to be a good deal, it can quickly become expensive if you have to pay extra for necessary upgrades and parts. Assuming you want a complete package with installation, the offer and price should include this:
- Screen(s) in chosen quality, color and size.
- Rails and brackets for installation.
- Motor and remote control for motorized screens.
- Shipping costs.
- Installation costs (incl. travel distance).
- VAT.
Ask for a concrete offer where payment terms and delivery time are specified. Don’t be afraid to ask questions if anything is unclear. A serious supplier will give you good answers.
What affects the price of screens?
-
Size:
The larger the screen, the more it will cost. -
Fabric:
Thickness, color and degree of transparency can make a big difference. -
Quality:
Zip screens can be supplied in many different qualities and with different guarantees. Screens with longer durability and warranty periods cost more. -
Operation:
Motorized screens with sun and wind automatics cost more than manual screens with a crank or cord pull. -
Motor:
All motors come with the basic function of raising/lowering the screen. The more expensive motors can, for example, come with additional functions such as resistance detection, which means that the motor stops if it detects that something is stuck in the rails. -
Quantity:
The more screens you order at the same time, the lower the unit price will be. It’s also more cost-effective to install several screens in one go. -
Placement:
Screens that need to be mounted very high or in otherwise difficult locations may require extra work/scaffolding and thus higher installation costs. -
Supplier:
Prices vary from supplier to supplier. Look for quality, experience and service.
How do you maintain screens?
- Start by running the screen all the way down. If you notice waves or distortions in the screen, it can be adjusted by changing the lower end stop limit.
- Use a brush to remove dust, pollen, insects and other loose dirt from both the screen and the structure.
- Thoroughly rinse the entire screen from top to bottom. Use medium water pressure. Avoid flushing directly into the cassette from the underside, as this can cause moisture to enter the motor.
- Wash the screen with a sponge or cloth dipped in clean water or mild soapy water (e.g. Zalo). For stubborn stains or stubborn insects, you can use a soft clothes brush.
- After washing, rinse the tablecloth and stand thoroughly with clean water, again from top to bottom.
- Go over the screen with a towel or soft cloth to wipe away excess water. Allow the screen to dry completely before running it up again.
- To preserve the screen cassette’s shine and paintwork, it is recommended to polish it a couple of times a season. Use polish and a soft cloth.
- Visible fasteners such as screws and bolts can be treated with a thin layer of lubricating oil such as CRC 5-56 to prevent rust. Avoid getting oil on the cloth itself.
If the screen makes a screeching noise when driven up or down, it may mean that it needs lubrication. Spray some silicone spray in the opening of the PVC rail where the zipper runs to solve the problem.

Can you open windows with screens?
If you have outward-opening windows, it is possible to open them even if the screen is pulled down to allow for ventilation. The prerequisite is that there is enough clearance between the screen cloth and the window frame so that the window can be opened without bumping into it. You need to measure accurately and make sure there is enough space for the cassette and bottom profile above the window.
Most external screens are installed at a small distance from the window frame to allow room for opening. For example, if you have windows that only open 10-15 cm, a distance of 5-8 cm between the screen and the window will be sufficient.
There are also zip screens that can be mounted directly on the window frame so that the fabric follows the movement of the window and does not hang in the way.
How much wind can a zip screen withstand?
If you’ve had awnings in the past, you’re probably familiar with the fact that they should be cranked in when the wind hits a roof. Most awnings can withstand wind speeds between 10 and 12 m/s, which corresponds to a fresh breeze on the Beaufort scale.
Good quality zip screens are designed to withstand far more than this, making them the most wind-resistant product on the market. The strongest zip screen solutions can withstand wind speeds of up to 33 m/s or 120 km/h, which on the Beaufort scale corresponds to the limit between a strong storm and a hurricane.
What are the benefits of zip screens?
One of the biggest benefits is the exceptionally good sun protection they provide. The screen cloth stops the sun’s rays before they reach the window and prevents the room inside from heating up. The amount of sunlight let in can be easily regulated by raising or lowering the screen as required. At the same time, zip screens preserve the view, unlike, for example, blinds or roller blinds. You still have good contact with the outside environment, even with the screen down.
The unique zip technology keeps the fabric tight and stable even in strong winds, unlike ordinary screens that can flap. A denser fabric also provides excellent privacy and keeps insects out even when the windows are open.
The screen fabric also filters out almost all harmful UV radiation, which protects people, furniture and interiors. On hot days, solar shading also contributes to lower electricity consumption for cooling.
Zip screens are also a hypoallergenic option as they collect less dust and pollen than other textiles. They are easy to keep clean and require minimal maintenance.
With all these benefits, it’s no wonder that zip screens have become a popular choice. You get effective solar shading, wind stability, privacy and insect protection in one solution, while preserving your view and letting in natural light.
