What do awnings cost?
The price of awnings varies depending on the type of awning, size, material and accessories. The very cheapest awnings can cost as little as a couple of thousand NOK, while the most expensive variants can cost up to 100.000 NOK. Most people end up paying between NOK 10.000 and 30.000 for good quality awnings.
- Simple manual awnings
A simple manual awning usually starts at around NOK 5.000 to 10.000. Larger and more advanced awnings with a motor and remote-control cost more, usually from NOK 15.000 and up. - Motorized awnings
A motorized awning typically costs 30-50% more than a manual awning of the same size. The price depends on the type of motor and automation. You should expect a starting price of around NOK 15.000 to 20.000 for a motorized awning. - Custom-made awnings
If the awning is to be customized or built in, it can quickly cost NOK 30.000 to 50.000 or more. Prices rise rapidly with size.
For an exact price, you need to ask for a specific quote based on your measurements, wishes and needs. As a rule of thumb, you can expect it to cost around NOK 500 to NOK 1,500 per square meter of awning fabric, plus installation costs.
How much does a new awning fabric cost?
There can be big price differences between different awning fabrics depending on the fabric’s quality, properties, size, patterns and guarantees. As previously mentioned, a new awning can cost anywhere from NOK 2,000 to 100,000.
Affordable awning fabrics:
Price: from around NOK 500 per square meter
Standard awning fabrics:
Price: from around NOK 800 per square meter
Exclusive awning fabrics:
Price: from approx. NOK 1.200 per square meter
Quality awning fabrics retain their color better and last longer than cheaper fabrics. They often have better impregnation, abrasion and tear resistance and better seams. A new awning fabric typically costs between NOK 1.500 and 3.000 per square meter including installation, depending on size and quality.

How long does an awning last?
When talking about the lifespan of an awning, we’re usually talking about two different elements: the awning frame and the awning fabric.
The awning frame itself can last for 15-20 years with a little maintenance. More affordable awning stands may have a slightly shorter lifespan, while some of the more expensive variants can last for 30-40 years.
The awning fabric should be replaced a little more often than this. The fabric is exposed to sun, weather and wind and has a shorter lifespan than the rest of the structure. It is typically replaced after 5-10 years. How well you maintain your awning is usually the decisive factor in how long it stays in good condition.
Arms, motors and other moving parts are also subject to wear and tear, and it may be necessary to replace individual parts if necessary. Well-known brands use higher quality components and require less frequent replacement.
Regular cleaning, lubrication of moving parts and correct setting of limit switches will extend the service life. The fabric should be rolled up in strong wind or rain.
The environment in which the awning is placed also affects its durability. Awnings near the sea or in polluted environments have a shorter lifespan than those in more sheltered environments.

Are awnings waterproof?
Most awnings are made of water-repellent or waterproof fabric that can withstand rain. High-quality acrylic fabric is likely to hold up to most downpours.
But awnings are first and foremost made for sun, not rain. In heavy rain over time, the awning fabric will absorb moisture and stretch, putting strain on the arms.
Awnings should therefore be retracted during heavy rainfall. An awning is also not completely sealed against splashing water from the side.
If you sit under the awning in rainy weather, you may find that you get a little wet due to sideways rain and water spray.
Are awnings subject to application?
Awnings do not usually require an application, as long as they are installed on your own property and do not cause a nuisance to neighbors. There may be restrictions on installing awnings on listed or protected buildings. In such cases, you may need to apply for permission.
In housing cooperatives and condominiums, there may be statutes that regulate the use of awnings. Facade changes such as awnings must then be applied for in advance. New awnings on facades facing the street may also be covered by local bylaws. Check with the planning and building department in your municipality to be sure.
How much wind can awnings withstand?
Most awnings can withstand a wind speed of between 10 and 12 m/s, provided they are correctly installed and adjusted. Some models are designed to withstand up to 20 m/s. In any case, awnings should always be retracted in strong winds. They are not designed to be left outside in storms and bad weather. Wind can wear down awning arms and mechanisms and, in the worst case, tear the awning loose.
Wind speed is measured in meters per second (m/s) or the Beaufort scale:
- 5 m/s = 3 Beaufort (light breeze)
- 10 m/s = 5 5 Beaufort (fresh breeze)
- 15 m/s = 7 Beaufort (stiff breeze)
- 20 m/s = 8 Beaufort (strong breeze)
There are awnings with automatic wind sensor control, which can retract the awning when it detects excessive wind speed. This means you don’t have to keep an eye on the wind yourself. Smart control costs more, but can save you damage and repair costs.
What are the benefits of awnings?
- Effective solar shading: Awnings stop the sun’s rays before they hit the window or door and provide good cooling.
- Preserves the view: Unlike internal blinds, you retain your view with an awning.
- Prevents glare: Awnings shield well against bright sunlight and glare, especially from low evening sun.
- Saves energy: Awnings can reduce the need for air conditioning or heat pump cooling.
- Creates a separate space: A sheltered awning provides an additional “outdoor space” to spend time in for much of the year.
- UV protection: The awning fabric filters out much of the harmful UV radiation, protecting people and furniture.
- Privacy protection: A rolled down awning provides more privacy from outside views.
- Increases the value of your home: Well-maintained, modern motorized awnings can increase the sale value of your home.
